When I remember Mike, I remember

an excellent student of wisdom
and of life
a driven soul
a superior athlete
an intellect far greater than my own
an ultimately unsettled, searching spirit
a superb backgammon player
one who listened to understand
a distant post-military man
a heart the size of New York
a man who would die for you - no questions asked
an extremely generous and loyal friend

Rest well my friend. You are remembered often and fondly.

Steve

Empty handed I entered the world
Barefoot I left it
My coming, my going-
Two simple happenings
That were entangled

--Kozan Ichikyou
Zen Monk, 1360

Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave with regret?
There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.

We live in the shadowlands - the sun always shines on the other side.

- -C.S. Lewis

Shocked and grieved to hear this awful news. Despite all these years, I recall Mike as a wonderful, warm, lovely guy

No Man is an island,
Entire of Itself,
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of think friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

--John Donne

While still I may, I write for you
The love I lived, the dream I knew.
From our birthday, until we die,
Is but the winking of an eye;
And we, our singing and our love,
What measurer Time has lit above,
And all benighted things that go
About my table to and fro,
Are passing on to where may be,
In truth's consuming ecstasy,
No place for love and dream at all;
For God goes by with white footfall.
I cast my heart into my rhymes,
That you, in the dim coming times,
May know how my heart went with them
After the red-rose-bordered hem.

Now the darkness only stays the night-time
In the morning it will fade away
Daylight is good at arriving at the right time
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away...

The love I bear Christ is but a faint and feeble spark, but it is an emanation
from himself: He kindled it and he keeps it alive; and because it is his work,
I trust many waters shall not quench it.

--John Newton

God bless you, Michael, my friend. With peace and forgetfulness, May you find what your heart and soul desire, May your soul continue and enjoy the quest to learn.

Love,
Penny

I worked with Michael in the word processing department at Standard Insurance. He was on night shift and I worked days. He sat in the cubicle next to mine so we would talk for a few minutes between shifts. I enjoyed my conversations with him very much. I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

On January 16th, the St. Francis Breadline in New York City gave bread in memory of Michael, at the request of our dear friend Terry Lampropoulos.

He was a man of Renaissance capacity who worked towards his highest dreams. Few people recognize excellence, even fewer like it, and fewer still try to live going towards excellence. Michael was one of the rare ones
who did. In addition, he had an incredibly honest sense of justice and a consistent compassion for others. I will miss everything he was in this life. Because of Michael I will work harder to be always on the side of justice, compassion, and excellence in my own life.
